my personal headcanon is the vees were unremarkable nobodies when they were alive. i just love it as a thematic throughline for them. they love to let the public of hell speculate on them being famed and acclaimed since before death, but the the truth is they were a d-list failed influencer that got by on cheap controversey and scamming, a broke junkie who burned every shaky bridge he ever had, and a worn-out broadcast production assistant with more rejected auditions and tossed out script pitches than he could count. nobody missed them when they were gone, nobody cared who they were until they were dead.

...but I feel like this is not just a "I'd have two nickels," situation, I think Renji really is the designated shouter for situations where everyone wants to stand around and do a two-page spread look cool. Is it because he won the All-Gotei Trash Talking Championship, or is this one of those things like tenteikura and opening senkaimon that are just traditional lieutenant duties? He's the only lieutenant present in the first situation. In the second, and in the second, he's the only lieutenant whose...captain is present?

He's also very tall and projects well. Ikkaku is also good at hollerin', but he this happens two panels later, so it's unsurprising that he's been banned from spokesperson duties:

yknow i gotta say. lex luthor can be a really fun and interesting villain, but sometimes it does just take me aback the way some people talk about him when trying to make him funny and cool, as if his biggest and most infamous shtick is not extreme, violent xenophobia.

it's actually funny because neil gaiman IS annoying about gay people. but michael sheen and david tennant love being gay. basically the opposite of whatever was happening with jensen ackles.

i rewatched re3 and i think carlos in re3 is often remembered for his "I know. You wanna ask me out. All the foxy ladies love my accent. It drives them crazy." line that understandably got cut from the remake, and re3make carlos seemed like a good guy all around, but i think carlos in re3 ironically felt a bit more complex imo despite the change to try and make him sound more appropriate through genuine praise with occasional playful flirting

jill finds carlos and in each version he has some kind of line where he kinda flirts. idk if he was written this way concerning his race, and the voice actor definitely tries to play into that latin lover stereotype compared to the remake's version, but out of all the resident evil men that make some Comments towards their female partners, he's really the only male character i'm giving the pass for making flirtatious comments in inappropriate moments, bc there is no way he really means it any of these times. carlos can say these lines after being chased by zombies, awoken from being unconscious alone, and narrowly missing nemesis multiple ways and one with jill scaring him into thinking they both could have died.

What I noticed here is that in the original, carlos is a lot less perfect. Compared to the remake, he has no introduction where he's the one saving jill or heroically stays behind for her to go on ahead, instead he's hiding, running, fighting, or unconscious (those scenes where he makes the jokes).

Furthermore, in re3 he attempts to be heroic (albeit in a very goofy way that'd definitely need to be reworked for a modern game), but he only takes out a few zombies and ends up unconscious, possibly again, making jill think he's died and he half jokingly admits being a hero is hard.

i'm not really sure why, but jill and carlos are split up from the train in re3r, i think it's to hit you over the head that umbrella is arresting and silencing important figures, when re3 a bit more subtly shows that carlos and his coworkers are all just disposable to umbrella. re3r carlos is much more noble, caring about who they were supposed to detain and why, and jill who crashed in the train. in re3, they both crash together but are split up for a bit before carlos really starts getting concerning about his own chances of survival.

Carlos can either reject Jill, saying he's not allowed to rest because he's one of the wicked (associated with umbrella), or flat out start despairing and is now serious about how he's one of umbrella's tools that don't matter. i cant tell by the cutscene if he means to kill himself, but his words imply it. he's hit by jill to snap him out of it, then he runs away from her.

while in re3r, he's heroically talking about staying behind to save the city, unfazed by nemesis and no mention to jill or anyone about how he isn't really with umbrella, and he doesn't seem to be putting on bravado to mask his feelings, unlike earlier in re3. the clock and church area in re3r was cut, but they replaced it with a short section of carlos going back to the area in re2 under the impression he's trying to rescue someone, instead of how his re3 self is starting to freak out about how everyone's dying.

later, carlos can either muster up the courage and come back and attempt to defend jill, or he'll come back too late and cry out, regretting that he wasn't there in time, which leads to him to try and make up for her wounds and personally save her life.

it just feels kinda ironic that re3r carlos is calling jill braver, when that fits much more w re3 carlos. re3r carlos has very little qualms about action in this game and rarely shows any uncomfortable emotions.

i think all his flaws concerning his fear and confusion makes the scene where you can finally play him to save jill meaningful. he goes from just doing a job that went horribly wrong and should have no chance of survival, to being inspired by a determined jill wanting to help others, and he is fully supporting her now instead of umbrella.

carlos once again joking (after saving jill twice in a row) is satisfying, and he goes back to genuinely trying to save each other and telling each other not to give up, even in the "bad" route he desperately doesnt give up, and its really good.
